New York, NY

I’ve just arrived home from another box-ticking, memory-filled trip.
The highlight again being New York.
Not just because I got to marry my best friend there in not one but two of the most beautiful spaces I’ve ever been in, or that I was lucky enough to have so many of my closest family and friends there to celebrate, eat and see the sights with, but because NYC has had my heart since my first visit and being able to experience it with all the people I love most in the world, made it the best experience of my life so far.

I’ve often heard New York City referred to as the food capital of the world.
This had me curious as to the food capital of NYC.
For those that don’t know, the city is made up of five areas referred to as ‘boroughs’; Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Having only really ventured around Manhattan, briefly around Brooklyn and even more briefly around The Bronx, my curiosity took me to google to find out just how many eateries there are in New York City and where a majority of the best are situated.

In 2015 there were 43,681 eating and drinking establishments recorded for nyc.
So when you compare that against 35,911 recorded for not just Sydney but all of Australia.. Holy shit!
Having done the math, it may only take me 30-40 years to eat my way though the big apple but it can be done. Never say never.

For every corner there’s a coffee shop, bagel or hot dog stand. Every side street a cool eatery, grocery store or deli. Every neighbourhood unlimited restaurants, bars and pubs. Certainly no judgment from me on time you will most likely spend procrastinating over your options.

I’m the worst when it comes to decisions, especially where food is concerned.
I always want more than one thing and I generally leave it until the last second to make my mind up. Or the waiter comes to me first before I’ve had sufficient time to stress over my options and quickly and sometimes not so politely I wave them on insisting I’ll be ready last. Once decision is made, I tend to get fomo and proceed to suggest sharing to minimise regret over said decision.

For those that don’t know, ‘FOMO’, aka ‘fear of missing out’ – is a slang term for a state of mental or emotional strain caused by the fear of missing out.

If like most travellers you have limited time in each location sometimes it’s best to plan ahead. Make a list of sights, eateries, bars and other to-do’s so you spend your time wisely. Being an avid review reader and search engine enthusiast, I’ve compiled a list of where I’ve been and what’s on my list for next time that I feel you shouldn’t miss when you visit.

vegas got me good

I’ve spent so much time traveling the last couple of years and not locked into a 9-5 and I wouldn’t change a single part of it. Not the money spent, nor the money I didn’t make while being away.  Maybe the flight delays, breaking my laptop and that time I fully stacked it in a hurry to get through customs in front of so many people, but other than that, nothing.

I think traveling is such an important part of life. Exploring new places and cultures and seeing parts of the world so far from our own.

California is one of my favourite places. Everywhere from the little sports bar we frequent, to the stretch of beaches in Malibu, Santa Monica Pier,  the giant shrimp in San Fran, Rodeo Drive. The list goes on.

For this trip I hadn’t pre booked a hire car and a couple hotels here and there because I didn’t want an exact plan. Sometimes you wake up keen for something different or you find out about something new  you’d prefer to do.
I realise this option is generally only ok if you have the time, but even if you don’t, sometimes things work out best when you wing it.
Uber’s great, but if you’re keen on having you’re own wheels, check out SKURT to get from A to B.

A simple app to have the car was delivered straight to my hotel room I didn’t even have to speak to anyone.

We stayed at the W hotel in West Beverly Hills/Westwood.
The hotel is in walking distance to so many cool little shops, cafes and bars.

If you’re interested in doing things like seeing a baseball game or theme park, Staples Centre and Universal Studios are within half hour drive or so from the hotel and Santa Monica Pier is around 15 minutes . If you’re keen on the Hollywood sign thing, something I’v been wanting to do for years and still haven’t, Griffith Park is  about 45 mins away.

Exploring with SKURT:  From LA we hit the road for Vegas.

I love the Vegas. Every time I leave though I’m glad to have survived it.

This time we were lucky enough to have about 30 of us in transit to a friend’s wedding in Mexico

VEGAS:
We did dinner at Firefly on the Friday night and had an upper bungalow at Drais Beach club the Saturday. Insane spot to spend the day. The rest of my time was spent hungover, so I basically have nothing else to report.

VENICE: Getting back from Vegas we weren’t sure where we wanted to stay. I just knew I wanted to be close to Abbott Kinney and Santa Monica. We found this cool little apartment block last minute called Venice Breeze Suites. An old building right on the boardwalk. If you don’t mind the bongo playing, street artists and bums, which you shouldn’t, they’re totally harmless and too busy being high all the time, it’s a great spot to stay.  With Santa Monica Pier at one end and Marina Del Ray at the other. There’s a beach and bike path running parallel that spans about 25 miles. Famous Muscle Beach and the skate park are basically just out the front and there’s always filming of TV shows and commercials happening. We had an ocean front suite on level 2. I wouldn’t go any lower and I’d only stay here if you had an ocean view room. Great for people watching and a view of the beach. There’s a fire escape/balcony right at our door and a rooftop area with a grill that has panoramic views.

LA

LA I love you.
Day trip down to Malibu, back to LA through Calabasas. Seeing and doing something new every time I come back here. I even do a heap of the exact same stuff and I love that too.

Room with a view☝

We chose to stay at the Viceroy this time and it was amazing!

Big ocean view room perfect for watching the sun set over Santa Monica.

Only a short walk down Ocean Ave to the Pier and just up Broadway a little further you have shopping hot spots and a heap of sweet eats.

For all the girls who have hair like mine, only manageable with a good blowdryer, Viceroy have THE best blowdryer I’ve ever used in any hotel I’ve stayed at in the states. I realise this probably isn’t the most important feature of the hotel, but I give it a bigger tick of approval just for it.
